The city of Barcelona has had a spotty history. However, there’s nothing spotty about FC Barcelona’s soccer legacy.
Barcelona gave Deportivo La Caruna a nice little beating this weekend by a score of 5-0. La Caruna shouldn’t feel too bad. With their scintillating performances, the Catalans are playing like they’re from another dimension.
The last time I felt such dominance was with AC Milan in the late 1980s and early 1990s. While Barcelona’s recent steak doesn’t have the longevity of those Milan teams, it’s still impressive.
One would be hard pressed to find a team from any league in the world that can match Barcelona’s present form. Barca is running away with the Primera Liga title 12 points clear of inconsistent Real Madrid.
Up until this point in the season, they’ve amassed 50 points in 19 games – a record in Spain – while managing 16 wins, one loss and two draws with a stunning 46 goal differential (59-13.) 41 of those goals have come off the feet of three players: the rejuvenated Samuel Eto’o with 18, Lionel Messi (arguably the world’s best attacker) with 12 and 11 for the rejuvenated Thierry Henry.
No wonder soccer fans are marvelling.
Barca’s vicious and vivacious soccer vitality is not good news for perennial French champions Lyon. The two sides are paired up in the round of 16 in Champions League. Not without players of worth and merit, Lyon will nonetheless need to find a way to take their game up a notch if they fancy a quarter-final berth.
Hey, they’re allowed to dream. After all, Barcelona is providing soccer enthusiasts with a dream season.
