Honoring James Creighton: Hockey’s Founding Father

Here’s a link to a rather neat story and one I was unaware of. The Prime Minister of Canada Stephen Harper honored the man considered to be a founding father for codifying and popularizing the game of hockey, James Creighton, with a grave stone in Ottawa this week. He had been resting in an unmarked grave for 80 years. Not very becoming given what hockey has meant to this country.

As most die hard hockey fans know, Harper is a member of the Society for International Hockey Research and so it was only fitting he took part in giving Creighton his due. It was just as gratifying to learn that Ottawa Senators owner Eugene Melnyk along with Calgary Flames owner Harley Hotchkiss each made significant contribution.

Harper gets it. So do the owners and the SIHR. The NHL should too.
