It does feel that way for the Inter Milan forward. For the amount of time spent on the pitch compared to other strikers in Serie A, Cruz seems to take full advantage. Let's take a basic up front look at some statistics in considering Cruz's uncanny ability to find the back of the net.
As it stands following today's game against Udinese, Cruz has 10 goals in 12 games in which he started. That suggests a .83 goals per game total. Of all the players in the top 10 scoring, Cruz is the only who has been used as a substitute on four occasions. Thus, he has participated in a total of 16 games. His shots to shots on target ratio is .21. For the record, the tall, elegant Argentinean is just as menacing in Champions League.
How does this compare to other Serie A strikers?
His teammate Zlatan Ibrahimovich is scoring at a .87 clip with 13 goals in 15 games. He has not started on three occassions. His shot ratio is .31.
David Trezequet of Juventus stands at .53 with 10 goals in 19 games (he started all games) and a .30 SOT.
In fact, when consulting other leading scorers like Francesco Totti, Adrian Mutu, Marco Boriello, Francesco Tavano, Goran Pandev, Claudio Bellucci, Amauri, Christiano Doni, Fabio Quagliarella and Alessandro del Piero, Cruz seems to be as effective, if not more, as any of them.
He is the only player that is a non-starter on a semi-regular basis. I say "semi" because coach Roberto Mancini has begun to use him as a starter.
Now, will Argentina give Julio Cruz a chance to sparkle on the international stage?
